Tour 1: Fairytales, Food and Folklore

barbtjod (1 of 1).jpg

To visit an island, is meeting the people and creatures who live there. Let us show you Nólsoy!

The village Nólsoy is situated on the small pretty green island by the same name - you see it across the shore from Tórshavn. I say that the island is green, as this text was written during summer, but it actually changes color as the seasons change. From green to moss to golden to the occasional white - then back to golden to moss and then again vivid summer green. The island is only 10 squaremeters, but that is more than enough for the 817 sheep, some 100.000 birds, and us 224 people (soon to be 225) who live here - and don’t worry, there is room for you, too!

One of us will greet you at the harbour. At our café we will serve you grilled cod (or something else delicious) and after lunch, take you on a one hour stroll in our village, tell stories about local heroes, tales of pirates, and the fairytale/legend/myth about the Scottish princess who once lived here (the old settlement in Cornvally is still visible), and of course answer all your questions about island life.

East side Nolsoy 3.jpg

A hike with an acquainted guide to the eastside of Nólsoy. The eastside of Nólsoy is scarred by heavy surf and stands in contrast to the mild west side, that is visible from Tórshavn. On our hike we will pass through the old settlement in Cornvalley, where legends say that a Scottish princess once lived. From here we walk to the Cross, the historical execution place. Our next stop is the world’s largest storm petrel colony in Hvíturð - you will not se any storm petrels during the day, since they are only active during the night, but you might hear them. If we are lucky, we will see puffins and fulmar in their natural environment.

After a good break with coffee and waffles we turn around and return to the village of Nólsoy, where you can enjoy the quiet - or visit some of the interesting places in the village.

  • Time: The tour is arranged on demand

  • Duration: Three hours

  • Difficulty: Moderate

  • Language: English, Faroese and Danish.

  • Price: The price is 2.000 kr + 200 kr. per person. This includes a guide, coffee and waffles and a hiking license. This license is needed since the hike goes through private lands. It goes to the farmers and to maintaining the track.

  • Possible add on: Add a lunch at our cosy café (150 kr. per person - we will serve you grilled cod) or a lunchbox to bring on the tour. We have two options for lunchboxes. The regular lunchbox: A fishcake sandwich and rhubarb lemonade, 150 kr. per person. The (un)traditional lunchbox: Rhubarb lemonade and a selection of bread with traditional Faroese meats and jams - served in untraditional ways, 250 kr. per person.

Tour 5: The lighthouse at the end of the world

At the most southern point of Nólsoy, you will find ‘the lighthouse at the end of the world’ - or that is what William Heinesen, our famous author, called it. From Tórshavn the Faroese author saw the boats and ships sailing towards the open sea and disappear from the view behind the big lighthouse of Nólsoy.

The lighthouse, Nólsoyar Viti, was built in 1893. Back then, the lens was one of the largest in the world. It is 2.82 meters high and weighs about four tons. Both the lighthouse and the related houses are superior workmanship, stacked from carved rocks. The houses were built for three families. Borðan’s population totaled 10 children at its peak. Borðan alternated with Nólsoy village in having the school. No one lives in Borðan now - except for the many sheep, birds and a few hares.

The guide will meet you at the harbor in Nólsoy Village. From there you will start the long hike towards Borðan - on the way to Borðan you can enjoy the beautiful scenery, the sound of birds, the smell of grass and wild flowers and the guide’s small stories about Nólsoy - it’s people, birds and plants. After a stop at Borðan - enjoying coffee and waffles - you will start the hike back to the village in Nólsoy.

If you do not want to walk both ways, you rent a boat to sail you from Tórshavn to the lighthouse, and walk back to the village - the guide will meet you at the lighthouse. The price for the boat is 350 kr. per person.
